2005-2006 Report

The 2005-2006 In-House League came to a close with the play-offs completing in April.

In the Second division, Yuri Anton met Bill Paredes on the top half of the Semi-finals. This match was a 5-set thriller. After losing the first two sets 9-11 and 3-11, Yuri managed to regroup and evened the score by taking the next two sets by the same score of 11-8 and then winning the fifth set by 11-6. On the bottom of the draw, the match between Milton Brown and Frank Chu also went to five sets. With the score tied at two sets each, Milton was able to pull off the fifth set easily by the score of 11-4.

The final between Yuri and Milton was relatively anti-climactic compared to the semi-finals. Yuri was able to control the pace of the match and eventually won the 2nd Division title by a score of 3-0 (11-6, 12-10, 11-9).

In the First division, unexpected events occurred. Firstly, on the top half of the draw, Predrag Petrovic was injured and had to default. Thus, Gary Chuntz, last year’s 1st runner-up winner, was able to advance to the semi-finals without a sweat. Then his next opponent, the undefeated Bolade Mustapha discovered that he had to go back to Nigeria for a period of six weeks and thus had to default from the match. With two consecutive defaults by his opponents, Gary easily ‘walked’ to the Final awaiting his next opponent.

On the bottom half of the draw, John Llanos reached the semi-finals by defeating Anguel Done in a five-set thriller by a score of 11-4, 8-11, 12-10, 8-11, 11-6 to meet David Lui who had defeated Wing Chu 3-1. In the match between John and David, the score was tied at 1-1 when David changed his strategy and avoided playing to John’s back hand pips rubber where he had the most trouble earlier. He managed to claim the next two sets and advanced to the Final.

The final between Gary and David was a rematch of last year’s quarter-final where David was eliminated. This time around, however, the result went David’s way. Although the score was 3-0 for David, the match was much closer than the score indicates. The first and third sets actually went to deuces before David claimed victory and sweet revenge.
